Jungfraujoch, Jungfrau-Aletsch Region, Switzerland
Photographic Story
The word 'cold' doesn't even begin to describe how freezing it was up here. The glacier before you is the Aletschgletscher (Aletsch Glacier) and was taken at the Jungfraujoch rail station, which is Europe's highest rail station. The Aletschgletscher stretches almost 15 miles from the base of the Jungfrau into the Canton of Valais all the way towards the Rhone valley near Brig and Visp. It covers an area of more than 45 square miles. The entire area is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage site. The entire area is the largest glaciated area in western Eurasia. There are two places with which you can walk out onto the snow for intimate views of Alps's largest glacier. The bitter wind was blowing clouds in and around the mountain tops, making late May feel like a blizzard in January. I had to hold my tripod solid in the snow as the wind was so powerful it could have easily taken my entire camera system off the side of the mountain.
