About the Photo
On my first visit to Glacier National Park, I witnessed a phenomenal sunset! The west side of Going-to-the-Sun road had already closed early for the winter to finish up some construction, so I was limited to the eastern half of the drive to find a good composition for my sunset the night I photographed this. My original plan was to shoot at St. Mary Lake at the famous Wild Goose Island lookout point. But when I started seeing how the light was hitting all of the peaks and the great views that were nearly 360 degrees just below Logan Pass, I decided to stay high in case the sunset did not reach further east in the park. I am glad I did, as I witnessed amazing fall colors below the peaks and fire in the sky above the impressive mountains! This was one of those sunsets that just continued on and on. I was about to pack it up, thinking the sunset was over after getting some great shots, but after the color dulled for a few minutes, it lit back up even more brilliant than the first ten minutes! I shot this, with fire in the sky above and beautiful fall colors dominating the slopes of the mountains below.
