Japanese Maple Tree in Peak Fall Color at Portland Japanese Garden
The Japanese maple tree at Portland Japanese Garden is easily one of the most recognizable trees in the Pacific Northwest. When you see it in peak fall color, you can understand why it's possibly the most photographed trees in the US.
On my first visit, the tree was still in transition, and while I did photograph an image titled Dragonfly, showcasing that transition, I wanted to make sure I photographed the tree in full peak. There were some early oranges, but still a decent amount of greens. Five days later, I returned to find it completely transformed. The leaves had turned a brilliant red and orange. The entire tree was glowing as if lit from within. It felt like a tree on fire!
What made this moment even more compelling was the ground beneath it. From what I learned, the garden is carefully maintained. I lucked out, finding fallen leaves scattered across the scene before being removed. That little bit of "clutter" added nice texture and enhanced the natural beauty of the composition! This image captures that fleeting peak of autumn. Timing worked out perfectly, as a wind storm took most of the leaves off the tree the next day!
