About the Photo
Taken shortly after sunset in the gorgeous town of Wengen, this photograph overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen. With cliffs on both sides of the valley towering a thousand feet high, numerous waterfalls pour off the sides to the valley below. Much like the town of Wengen where this was shot, many of these villages in the Alps are completely automobile free. Generally the ever-efficient Swiss train system is the only way into these towns besides walking in. This entire scene you see before you is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage region. It is part of the greater Bernese Oberland in the Swiss Canton of Bern. The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is the most glaciated region in the Alps, including the famous trio of mountains: The Eiger, the Jungfrau and the Monch. The Bernese Oberland is generally regarded as one of the greatest mountaineering places in the world.
